As I told you yesterday, I’ve promised myself I’m going to start using our elliptical trainer along with our low-carb diet to see if what the addition does.

Today is the day.

I’m going to start slowly, since I haven’t been on it in awhile, and I’ll try to build up my time and the resistance as I go, at least once a week.

I’ll report back at the end of March.

Wish me luck? (This exercise thing is hard for an old broad like me…. )

Encouragement

My husband and I set out to lose a bunch of excess lard and get more fit in order to hopefully increase the amount of years we can spend together happily. (We celebrated our 43rd wedding anniversary June 14th, and we both feel that is clearly NOT LONG ENOUGH!

I told you recently that to date, my husband has lost 33 lbs and I’ve lost 28. We’re eating in a much more healthy manner and we’re exercising daily on the elliptical trainer we bought.

Some days are easier than others to stay on our healthier lifestyle.

I received TWO much-needed-and-appreciated boosts this past week!

We go bowling on Wednesday evenings with long time good friends, the Taylors. I’ve been hearing good things about my husband’s weight loss for quite awhile now. This past Wednesday, though, my friend said she noticed that “I” had lost weight recently. She said my jeans looked looser and that she could tell a difference in my mid section. :0)

Yesterday, my wonderful massage therapist did her magic. AHHHHH! As we were gathering her equipment together, she said she could tell my weight loss in my face.

With these two kind comments, I’m feeling SO encouraged! I had been down because I had lost almost 30 lbs and no one seemed to notice there was any less of me….

When the scales are showing a difference, and the tape measurer is confirming there is less of me, it really doesn’t COUNT until people start NOTICING.  I can’t tell you how MUCH it means when you’ve been working hard to change the bad habits of a lifetime, that someone actually SEES a difference and cares enough to let you know.

I know. I’m an adult and I shouldn’t NEED the encouragement of others when I KNOW I’m doing a good thing for myself, but I have to admit that IT SURE FEELS GOOD. :0)

I’m very lucky to have NICE folks around me.

Diet Progress – To Eat or Not to Eat…

At the first of the year, I wrote a post called, “My New Year’s Resolution for 2012″ which said I wanted to look like Julia Roberts.

To that end – and proving that New Year’s Resolutions should be something you really intend to do – I will report my progress monthly.

I actually started working toward this goal on January 17th. My husband had a health scare, and we ended up in the ER running all kinds of tests. Happily enough, the tests all returned as normal, so his problems were due ONLY to his change in blood pressure medication.

The scare, though, finally got through to us that we really needed to get our extra lard off and exercise to get to a point where we can enjoy what remains of our lives – hopefully, quite a few years…

We agreed on what we would, and would not eat and drink – not an easy feat since we don’t even use the same salt! :0)

DIET: ( We have to do something we can live with long term)

  • Breakfast – cold cereal, fruit, 2% milk.
  • Lunch – large salad, chef type, with the regular blue cheese dressing we like.
  • Dinner: Lean Cuisine and a side of steamed veggies.

Snacks:  (One from the list)

  • Shared fruit
  • Fresh squeezed orange juice
  • Hard boiled egg
  • carrots
Other:
  • Other: husband – glass of red wine
  • me – coffee, black

*Special – we go bowling with good friends once a week and we either console ourselves or celebrate with one scoop of ice cream at Braums.

EXERCISE: We decided we would try to walk every day. We went to what my husband calls “The Geezer Trail” that goes almost all the way around the center of our small town. We walked the whole thing two days in a row. I had to stop and huff, puff, and wheeze several times, but we made it. Not only do I have trouble with shortness of breath, my hips also scream after a very small amount of walking. :0( My husband is very encouraging, though, and I AM improving day by day.

Now we’re walking the “Walking Trail” at our local park. This is a GREAT trail with a fantastic view of a valley below. There is a lot of up and down to the trail, and a lot of watching where I’m walking so I don’t fall and break my bones – a very good thing for me. He walks it easily, so we’ve started taking one of our dogs one day and the other dog the next, to give him more challenge. I get short of breath on the ‘up’ part, but I’m improving daily. On the flat part, my hips give me grief, but I’m hoping that will ease as we do it. We’re walking farther every day!

PROGRESS TO DATE:

1)  I haven’t gotten any taller – though my massage therapist comes this month and may be able to help me with this…

2) I have lost almost 11 pounds!

This is an “Encouragement Bear” I received from NutriSystem years ago. I have awarded it to myself again now!

INCHES LOSS:

  • CHEST: – 1/2″
  • AB – 2″
  • HIPS – 1″

(My husband has lost 18.5 lbs – the creep! WHY is it that men lose weight so much more quickly than women?) :0(

So – we have a start! We have a LONG way to go on the ‘losing the lard’ project, but it’s coming off.

The exercise is very hard for ME at this point, but I feel good about myself that I’m walking farther each day. I have a pedometer that I carry in my pocket. Supposedly, the goal is to walk 10,000 steps a day. Hahahahahaha! The most I’ve done so far is 5,294.  (My son said he did over 20,000 in Shanghai).

I’ll probably never do a marathon, but my clothes are getting looser!

Another progress report in March -

Wish me luck?
