The last couple of days we’ve received the first Christmas cards of the year. I can’t tell you how wonderful it makes me feel, lifting my spirits, to receive beautiful cards – some handmade – and nice notes from people who mean a lot to me.
“Christmas tag-sale. Handmade gifts for that hard-to-find person.” – Unknown

We received one card with a print of a watercolor painted by a relative we hardly ever get to see. He paints one each year to be inserted into the front of a handmade card. It’s really special, and we love to see what he’s created each year!
“What is the purpose of reindeer? It makes the grass grow, sweetie.” – Unknown

Today we received a handmade card from a lady I consider a really close friend, though we’ve never actually ‘met’ face-to-face. She used to have her pressed flower art on my website. She hasn’t been creating for a few years now, but I’m so lucky to know her. She’s such a lovely, talented person.
“The worst gift is a fruitcake. There is only one fruitcake in the entire world, and people keep sending it to each other.” Johnny Carson

Today we also heard from a long-time friend, a former employer of my husband whose family moved to Alaska. We lost track of him last year, so it was TERRIFIC to find he and his family are temporarily here in Arkansas! We’re planning to call and invite them to dinner. What a treat to be able to really catch up again!

I’m late on sending out Christmas cards this year. Part of the reason is that my son is home, and will be leaving soon for 9 months in Shanghai. I’m trying to spend every minute I can with him, soaking up his wonderful sense of humor, world-class hugs, and good times together before he leaves.

“Perhaps the best Yuletide decoration is being wreathed in smiles.” ~Author Unknown
I’m beginning to think I’ll answer each card as they come in – taking the time to type a letter to each one, letting them know in more detail what we’ve been doing, changes during the past year, plans for the coming year, etc. Again, I’m trying to keep my promise to myself to keep in touch more often than once a year….
“I wish we could put up some of the Christmas spirit in jars and open a jar of it every month.” ~Harlan Miller
I hope that you are sending a receiving cards this year. I’m sending handmade cards this year – some made by me. Others made by artists on my website, Creative Artworks. I love trying to match a card with the personality of the person I’m sending it to.

“Keep your Christmas-heart open all the year round.” ~Jessica Archmint
My husband’s favorite Christmas cards, though, are really sparkly cards. Every other year I make a point of having him choose the cards he really likes and we send those. I prefer the handmade ones, but I like HIM, too, and want to do something nice for him when I can. :0)

“They err who thinks Santa Claus comes down through the chimney; he really enters through the heart.” ~ Mrs. Paul M. Ell.
My parents exchanged boatloads of cards with friends, family, and business people each year when I was growing up. I remember how I loved looking at all the beautiful cards. It made me feel rich that I could spend time looking at all the various cards, reading the notes. My mom pinned the cards to the draperies that ran the full length of one wall of our living room. When you came in the front door, the first thing you saw was the ‘wall’ of beautiful Christmas cards!
“Like snowflakes, my Christmas memories gather and dance – each beautiful, unique and too soon gone.” ~ Deborah Whipp
