“Outside the Box” for Valentine’s Day

“Come live in my heart, and pay no rent.”  Samuel Lover

Watch – Beaded – “Diana” by Robyn Soules

I’ve talked about the importance of showing your love EVERY day, and that it need not cost anything. Looking for ways to show your life’s partner how much he or she means to you is a wonderful thing for both of you – a challenge for YOU to come up with creative ways to delight the person who means the world to you, and a joy to be on the receiving end of so much ‘good stuff.’ :0)

“Forget love, I’d rather fall in chocolate.” — Sandra J. Dykes

Asian-Flower-Print by Derek McCrea

Showing you know, respect, and appreciate the quirks of your favorite person lets them know you think they’re special. For example, if he loves to cook, getting him something that will make it easier or more fun for him is a nice way to show him he’s on your mind.

“I wrote your name in the sand but it got washed away, I wrote your name in the sky but it got blown away, I wrote your name in my heart where it will stay forever.” Author Unknown

Sweatshirt-Cross-Stitched-Women’s by Angela Kiefer

My husband and I love to create metal ‘critters’ in our shop. I had been experimenting, trying to find a paint to use for the small parts or accents that we didn’t want to powder coat. I was frustrated because I wasn’t finding anything that looked shiny and bright when it dried and would LAST. My husband quietly ordered a set of model airplane paint and brought it to me the next time we were trying to finish a metal cat. I tried it and was delighted! It was just what I’d been looking for, but I didn’t have any experience with model airplane paint. The next week, two MORE sets of paint arrived via UPS. A special, “outside the box” gift that was PERFECT for me.

“Laugh as much as you breathe and love as long as you live.” unknown

Card – “Blooms” – Thank-You-5 by Linda Lewis

One of my presents to my husband was Laffy Taffy. Yeah, I know – kind of ‘tacky’ as a present, but you should have seen my husband’s face when he opened the package. He had been grabbing a handful of the candy at our pharmacist’s store, and chiding the pharmacist if he didn’t have any. We had looked all over our small town for more, but no one carried it. So that was a clear way I could show my husband I was thinking of him.

“I love you not because of who you are, but because of who I am when I am with you.” Roy Croft

Bottle Caddy – Hand-Stained– Wooden by Mindy Sommers

One of the best things you can do is very simple – and should be common courtesy – but isn’t: say ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’  It amazes me when I listen to couples like us, who have been married a long time.  They treat complete strangers with more courtesy than they do the person with whom they live.  What an upside-down thing is THAT!

“Vintage-Wine-Record”-Handmade-Journal  by Lisa Richey

I’m trying to start a ‘movement’ to NOT celebrate Valentine’s Day only once a year – but to celebrate it all year long. Love is too important to only celebration on February 14th!

“You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.” Unknown

Pressed-Flower-Bottle-Bags-Set-of-6  by Indian Crafts

So, use all you know about your love to get him or her special things throughout the year. Send a sappy Valentine in February; another in June; and maybe October?  Show them in little ways and big ways how much you enjoy sharing your lives. Show them you think of them and appreciate them EVERY DAY.

How can YOU show your love TODAY?

Lovenotes

“Lovenote – The More I Know You” by Lisa Richey

“The more I know you, the more I want to know.”

“Lovenotes” by Lisa Richey will make you smile, make you laugh, make you tear up. They’ll definitely get a positive reaction when you care enough to send them to the one you love for Valentine’s Day – or ANY day you want to let someone know how much you care.

“For it was not into my ear you whispered, but into my heart. It was not my lips you kissed, but my soul.” Judy Garland

“Lovenote – Pretend” by Lisa Richey

“I don’t pretend to know what you want, but I offer love.” -Neil Finn

These cards are wonderful whether you’ve just met the love of your life or have lived and loved for over 40 years, like I have. They’re pretty – simple – heartfelt – and classic. All handmade by Lisa for you to send.

“Just so you know, there’s a space that only you can fill. Just so you know, I loved you then, I guess I always will.”  -Author Unknown

“Lovenote – “Yes!” by Lisa Richey

This one is my favorite. I laughed aloud when I saw it for the first time, and it still makes me grin every time I see it. :0)

“When you smiled you had my undivided attention. When you laughed you had my urge to laugh with you. When you cried you had my urge to hold you. When you said you loved me, you had my heart forever.” -Author Unknown

So many hats and only one head!

“So many hats and only one head!” Author Unknown

I have to admit I love hats, even though I seem to have a small head and have trouble finding hats that don’t make me look like a mushroom.

Hat – Crocheted – Chunky-Red by Sandi Myers

“Life is like a new hat. You don’t know if it suits you if you keep trying it on in front of your own mirror.”  Shirley McLaine.

This one by Sandi Myers would keep the cold out, but wouldn’t completely smash your hair the way some caps do. The fact that it’s beautiful is a definite PLUS, too!

Hat – Crocheted – White-Frilly by Sandi Myers

I love this one because it’s so FEMININE!

“Whenever you wear your hat, your day will be special.”  (Margo Nickel)

Hat – Crocheted – Lilac-Frilly by Sandi Myers

Isn’t the color on this one scrumptious?

“A hat is a flag, a shield, a bit of armor, and the badge of femininity. A hat is the difference between wearing clothes and wearing a costume; it’s the difference between being dressed and being dressed up; it’s the difference between looking adequate and looking your best. A hat is to be stylish in, to glow under, to flirt beneath, to make all others seem jealous over, and to make all
men feel masculine about. A piece of magic is a hat.” (Martha Sliter)

You can see the rest of Sandi’s hats and other wearable art HERE.

Cabled-Hat-and-Scarf-Hand-Knit-Grape by Nancy Hearne

“I myself have 12 hats, and each one represents a different personality. Why just be yourself?”  (Margaret Atwood)

Nancy made a set of this color for me, and I LOVE it!

Cabled-Hat-and-Scarf- Abergine (Burgundy) by Nancy Hearne

I think this set is a glorious color, too!

“Women who love hats don’t get jealous. It makes them happy to see a hat that looks good on someone else. Women who wear hats know who they are.” Author Unknown.

See the rest of Nancy’s hats and mufflers HERE.

“Leave everyone wondering which is the more interesting piece of work…you or your hat.” Author Unknown.

New Year’s Resolution

“The-Diva”-Hand-painted-Glasses-Set-of-4 by Rebecca Kelman

We all make – and break – New Year’s resolutions every year, having the best of intentions. Mine last year was to look like Julia Roberts. As you can tell from my profile picture, I didn’t make it. :0)  BUT, I REALLY MEAN IT THIS YEAR!

“Dachshund” 2-Pack Card Set by Darlene Fletcher

The resolution I made – and have KEPT – for over 10 years now is to always buy handmade, hand – painted, and/or personalized things from other artists.

Bottle Caddy – Hand-Stained– Wooden by Mindy Sommers

This has been an easy, wonderful resolution that has created lots of win/win situations.

Wavy-Knit-Afghan-LLA2101 by Nancy Hearne

For example, I haven’t bought a greeting card or note card from stores in years. I’ve made a point of gathering wonderful artists on Creative Artworks who offer a mind-boggling selection of greeting cards and note cards. These are either handmade, one at a time, or printed from original artwork. I’m really proud to send these to my family and friends. They, in turn, never fail to remark on how “beautiful,” “unusual,” “sweet,” “heart-warming,” “clever,” “you-fill-in-the-blank” the cards are!

“Personalized-Hand-Painted-Pet-Name-Plaque” by Jane Loedding

I LOVE supporting artists who make things with their own hands, and own imaginations. I get something I won’t find at stores across the nation while saying a big “thank you” to the artist, letting them know they created something I either wanted for myself or to give someone I care about.

“Schnauzer”-Fine-Art-Print by Evelyn Morris Hecht

Please consider making buying handmade or hand-painted products from REAL PEOPLE  one of YOUR New Year’s resolutions this year.  This is one resolution you can KEEP!

Gerbil-or-Goat-Print by Derek McCrea

Fair warning, though – this activity may be addictive! :0)

Jan 2012 Prize – Win a “Pink Ribbon” Hobby Bag!

Sandi Myers is sponsoring the January 2012 contest on Creative Artworks with a “Pink Ribbon” Hobby Bag!

“Pink Ribbon” Hobby Bag – White by Sandi Myers

(The left side of the picture shows the whole hobby bag. The image on the right side is a close up of the pink ribbon applique.)

Made from an adult sized medium sweatshirt. 50% cotton/50% polyester, this hobby bag is perfect for storing your latest yarn project or art supplies needed for the artwork you’re doing, supplies for spending a morning at the park, things you need to take to the gym…

Machine Washable 20.5″ across, 11.5″ from bottom to neck, 19.5″ from bottom to top of straps. The bottom is serged with a locked stitch, then the seam is folded over and sewn again, so it won’t come apart. The sleeve seam is still there, and turned under and stitched, to give it strength. The neckline has been stitched as well to prevent stretching. The ‘straps’ are made from the shoulders.  A nice, soft, sturdy bag for any hobby!

The Pink Ribbon, of course, is to honor breast cancer survivors or the memory of a friend or loved one.

I love this whole idea of re-purposing sweatshirts! A wonderful ‘green’ idea – Good for our planet and great for us. :0)

Thanks, Sandi, for your generosity in sponsoring our January contest!

You can see all of Sandi Myers’ work on Creative Artworks here.

If you’d like a chance to win this Pink Ribbon Hobby Bag, send:

Spirits Lifting!

“The other day I sent my girlfriend a huge pile of snow. I rang her up and asked, ‘Did you get my drift?’” – Unknown

”Angel” Hand Painted Resin Figurine by  Charlene  Bodero

The last couple of days we’ve received the first Christmas cards of the year. I can’t tell you how wonderful it makes me feel, lifting my spirits, to receive beautiful cards – some handmade – and nice notes from people who mean a lot to me.

“Christmas tag-sale. Handmade gifts for that hard-to-find person.” – Unknown

We received one card with a print of a watercolor painted by a relative we hardly ever get to see. He paints one each year to be inserted into the front of a handmade card. It’s really special, and we love to see what he’s created each year!

“What is the purpose of reindeer? It makes the grass grow, sweetie.” – Unknown

“Christmas Penguin” Hand Painted Resin Figurine by Charlene Bodero

Today we received a handmade card from a lady I consider a really close friend, though we’ve never actually ‘met’ face-to-face. She used to have her pressed flower art on my website. She hasn’t been creating for a few years now, but I’m so lucky to know her. She’s such a lovely, talented person.

“The worst gift is a fruitcake. There is only one fruitcake in the entire world, and people keep sending it to each other.”  Johnny Carson

Today we also heard from a long-time friend, a former employer of my husband whose family moved to Alaska. We lost track of him last year, so it was TERRIFIC to find he and his family are temporarily here in Arkansas! We’re planning to call and invite them to dinner. What a treat to be able to really catch up again!

“Even as an adult I find it difficult to sleep on Christmas Eve.  Yuletide excitement is a potent caffeine, no matter your age.”  ~Carrie Latet

“Santa Joy” Hand Painted Resin Figurine  by Charlene Bodero

I’m late on sending out Christmas cards this year. Part of the reason is that my son is home, and will be leaving soon for 9 months in Shanghai. I’m trying to spend every minute I can with him, soaking up his wonderful sense of humor, world-class hugs, and good times together before he leaves.

“Gingerbread Girl” Hand Painted Resin Figurine by Charlene Bodero

“Perhaps the best Yuletide decoration is being wreathed in smiles.”  ~Author Unknown

I’m beginning to think I’ll answer each card as they come in – taking the time to type a letter to each one, letting them know in more detail what we’ve been doing, changes during the past year, plans for the coming year, etc. Again, I’m trying to keep my promise to myself to keep in touch more often than once a year….

“I wish we could put up some of the Christmas spirit in jars and open a jar of it every month.”  ~Harlan Miller

I hope that you are sending a receiving cards this year. I’m sending handmade cards this year – some made by me. Others made by artists on my website, Creative Artworks. I love trying to match a card with the personality of the person I’m sending it to.

“Keep your Christmas-heart open all the year round.”  ~Jessica Archmint

My husband’s favorite Christmas cards, though, are really sparkly cards. Every other year I make a point of having him choose the cards he really likes and we send those. I prefer the handmade ones, but I like HIM, too, and want to do something nice for him when I can. :0)

“Santa Noel” Hand Painted Resin Figurine by Charlene Bodero

“They err who thinks Santa Claus comes down through the chimney; he really enters through the heart.” ~ Mrs. Paul M. Ell.

My parents exchanged boatloads of cards with friends, family, and business people each year when I was growing up. I remember how I loved looking at all the beautiful cards. It made me feel rich that I could spend time looking at all the various cards, reading the notes. My mom pinned the cards to the draperies that ran the full length of one wall of our living room. When you came in the front door, the first thing you saw was the ‘wall’ of beautiful Christmas cards!

“Like snowflakes, my Christmas memories gather and dance – each beautiful, unique and too soon gone.” ~ Deborah Whipp

“Dotty Santa” – Hand Painted Resin Figurine by Charlene Bodero

I hope that YOU are sending and receiving cards this year – reaching out to friends and family – letting them know how much they mean to you.

“Which Christmas is the most vivid to me? It’s always the next Christmas.” ~ Joanne Woodward

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Heartwarming Christmas Cards

I’m so proud to tell you about Cindy Smith and Christy Aguirre! These talented, NICE ladies have been on Creative Artworks for several years now, and my pride in their work simply grows and grows.

“A Christmas candle is a lovely thing; It makes no noise at all, But softly gives itself away; While quite unselfish, it grows small.” Eva K. Logue

Christy’s illustrations are inspired by children. She enjoys watching them enjoy life, taking in the wonders all around them, living freely. Her hope is that their cards will bring you to that child-like place inside and encourage you to live from your true heart. Maybe that’s a lot to want from a greeting card, but her heart believes all things are possible. She bets yours does, too.

“Christmas Eve was a night of song that wrapped itself about you like a shawl. But it warmed more than your body. It warmed your heart… filled it, too, with a melody that would last forever.”  Bess Streeter Aldrich

As an interior designer for several years, Cindy enjoyed creating external spaces with color and pattern where people would feel nurtured and “at home”. She hopes their cards bring a sense of inspiration and help you feel nurtured and “at home” inside yourself. Painting them, as well as writing the text for the cards, is a gift from her child’s heart to yours. She hopes they make you smile!

“Christmas, children, is not a date. It is a state of mind.” Mary Ellen Chase

I love Cindy’s and Christy’s cards, and have ordered from them several times. They not only make Christmas cards you’ll be proud to send this year; they make cards for all occasions, plus card and magnet combinations, and enclosure cards, too!

“A little smile, a word of cheer, A bit of love from someone near, A little gift from one held dear, Best Wishes for the coming year.. These make a Merry Christmas!” John Greenleaf Whittier.

Whenever I give a card to friends or family, I feel so good. The reaction is always the same – people exclaim over the quality, GORGEOUS artwork. They love the heartwarming messages. They thank me again and again. :0)

“Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.” Norman Vincent Peale

So, do yourself a favor and browse through all the wonderful boxes of cards Christy and Cindy are offering for the holidays. You can choose a box or more of 8 cards of the same design, or you can build your own box or two with any combination of 8 cards per box. What more could anyone ask?

To see all of Cindy and Christy’s Christmas Card designs, click on this link

To see ALL of their designs for special days throughout the year, plus birthday cards, get well cards, thinking of you, and more, click on this link.

I regularly order their Build a Box items, choosing the number of cards I like from all of their designs. This way I have all kinds of beautiful cards on hand for any occasion!

ENJOY – and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Ornaments are Memories

After many, many years of Christmas tree decorating, I’m lucky to have gathered all homemade Christmas ornaments. I made some of them. I’ve bought others made by the artists on my website, Creative Artworks.  Some I’ve bought from handmade websites like ArtFire and Etsy.

Now, each year when I trim my tree, I’m flooded with wonderful memories. I remember who made the ornaments, or the year I received the ornament, and more. What a rich, wonderful experience!

“Light-Bulb-Santa-Ornament” by Linda Faber

These can be on YOUR tree this year! They’re hand painted light bulbs that are signed and dated by the artist.

These quilled snowflakes by Mary Frey will look beautiful on your tree.

Snowflakes – Set-of-3 by Mary Frey

When each ornament is a work of art, or made by someone you know, or given to you by someone you love, each tree decoration surrounds you with wonderful, warmth, inside and out.

And when someone visits you during the holidays and asks you about one or more of the ornaments, you can share the joy of love and cherished memories with them! :0)

Whoooooo-oooooooooo!

Fridge Magnet - Cross Stitch - "Halloween by Angela Kiefer

Halloween is such a fun holiday! I love its emphasis on dressing up, trick or treating, parties, good food and fun.

Halloween - Trick-or-Treat-Bear by Debbie Garrett

It makes me feel ANCIENT that I trick-or-treated as a child with no adult supervision. A group of friends would gather and then head for the neighborhoods where the houses were close together, making for lots of good chances for wonderful treats.

We ate half the candy we got while we were out! No adults with us or following us in cars. No indoor parties in lieu of trick-or-treating. No adults going through our goodies to be sure they were safe before we ate them.  It’s sad that the world has changed so much and that much of the fun of the holiday has had to be changed in order for our kids to be safe.

I’m delighted, though, that so many adults really put themselves out now to create a fun time for their kids. The holiday now can be just as much fun – just different. I also love to hear about the adults whose favorite holiday was always Halloween having big parties with their friends to add new memories to their cherished old ones. :0)

There is still time to order some wonderful things for your Halloween celebration, but you’ll need to hurry.

“Wonderful Handmade Baskets for Christmas” ArtFire Collection

Sandra, of QuillingbySandraWhite on ArtFire, collected these items from ArtFire artisans for her collection called, ”Wonderful Handmade Baskets for Christmas.”

“Wonderful Handmade Baskets for Christmas” ArtFire Collection

She kindly included my “Rich” hand painted basket in her collection!

Sandra’s shop is to die for. She offers beautiful quilled wedding invitations & birth announcements, birds, animals, flowers, quilled cards and one of a kind pieces.

I honestly love her work, and had trouble deciding which item I wanted to show you the most here. I finally decided on this one -

Quilled Floral #2 OOAK Blues and Pinks

I LOVE the colors and texture in this one.

You won’t believe what Sandra can do with little strips of paper.

Quilling is exacting, time-intensive work, and you really must love what you do to create in this medium.

Sandra is a master quiller, and I’m delighted to have found her shop.

Do yourself a favor. Take a break from whatever you’re doing and feast your eyes on some stunning work!

THANK YOU, Sandra, for creating this beautiful collection, and for including my basket in it.! :0)

September Contest on Creative Artworks!

This month I’m giving away a set of 5 of my hand-painted, personalized note cards in a “Fall Leaves” design to the winner, whose name will be drawn on September 30th.

"Fall Leaves" Note Card Set

Each card is made from heavy card stock. Dimensions of each card are 5 x 7 and are blank inside.  Each card has a different leaf, and each is painted by hand with acrylic and watercolor paint. The acrylic paint gives a nice texture and 3- dimensional quality to the painting. I also like to add some pastels to the background to add richness to the card.

I’ll also put your name or your initials on each one!  Of course, envelopes are included.

There are only 9 days left in the contest.  Winner will be contacted via email, and the winner’s name will be in the welcome paragraph on the home page on October 1st.

If you’d like to enter, please send an email to me at linda@creativeartworks.cc

with

Your full name

Your full shipping address

And a phone number (optional) in case we can’t reach you about your win via email.

Of course, all your personal information is very carefully guarded and will not be given or sold to anyone.

If you have the time to visit Creative Artworks, you’ll see the work of many very talented artists!
