My husband and I have decided to try Square Foot Gardening, the technique developed by Mel Bartholomew many years ago. He has a 2nd edition out now, plus a book devoted to questions from his readers, plus a harvesting and cooking book.
We’ve tried gardening on our land before. We got some results, but we’re on top of a ridge line on hopeless soil, and we have very little knowledge. The idea of building 4-square-foot ‘mini-gardens’ laid on TOP of our awful soil, including the perfect soil mix, adding some irrigation, etc., is exciting.
I’m reading the main how-to book now, taking notes, and scheming, with a look of fierce joy on my face. Can you see it?
I like his ideas on efficiency, realism versus ‘what’s always been done,’ and more. I like the idea of not wasting seed.
We’re going to try this, and I’ll keep you up on what our results are.
If you’re already doing this, please share your experience, opinions, suggestions, etc.

This is a brilliant idea! Can’t wait to see photos further down the line of your plants
I hope this works, Jenny. We have a gazillion questions at this point, but it’ll be great fun to try.
